On the night of Saturday, January 29, 2011, recent past, Quito was declared officially as the American Capital of Culture 2011, in a ceremony held in the Teatro Sucre in this city, and sponsored by the Bureau of Cultural Capitals, based in Barcelona Spain.
The International Bureau of Cultural Capitals has its origins in 1998 when it began the appointment of the cultural capital of the Americas,with the name of American Capital of Culture. Xavier Tudela, president of the Bureau, said that one of the purposes of designation of American Capital City of Culture 2011, is to promote integration in the cultural world, and contribute to the knowledge of the peoples of the continent,and that the designation set a strong bond of cooperation from Europe, a continent where historically these appointments were initiated.
So then after the ceremony on January 29, will begin with the broadcast advertising of the city of Quito, in media such as Discovery Channel Antena 3.
Tudela affirm that this recognition will mark a before and after for the citizens of Quito, so that they enhance this platform to make themselves known to the world in the unexplored cultural activities.
Mayor Augusto Barrera, called for his part, that all citizens to be part of cultural shows, and in this way they show the love, belonging and identity as citizens of the capital, and Ecuador.
